U.S.S. Oriskany

(From the U.S. Naval Historical Center, Washington, D.C.)

USS Oriskany, a 27,100 ton Ticonderoga class aircraft carrier, was built at the New York Navy Yard. Though she was launched in October 1945, construction was suspended in August 1947 and she was completed to a revised design that was also used in modernizing several other ships of the Essex and Ticonderoga classes. Commissioned in September 1950, Oriskany deployed to the Mediterranean Sea between May and October 1951 and steamed around Cape Horn to join the Pacific Fleet in May 1952. She made one Korean War combat cruise, from September 1952 to May 1953.

Following the end of the Korean conflict, Oriskany continued her Pacific Fleet service for more than two more decades, deploying regularly to the Western Pacific for tours of duty with the Seventh Fleet. She was out of commission from January 1957 until March 1959, during which time she was modernized with a new angled flight deck, steam catapults, an enclosed "hurricane" bow and many other improvements that permitted safer operation of high-performance aircraft. In 1961, she became the first aircraft carrier to be fitted with the revolutionary Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS).

Oriskany's second war began with her 1965 WestPac cruise, during which her planes hit targets in North and South Vietnam. Several more combat tours followed as the Southeast Asian conflict waxed and waned. Tragedy struck the carrier on 26 October 1966, during her second Vietnam War deployment, when fire ravaged her forward compartments, killing 44 members of her crew and air group. Oriskany was repaired in the U.S., returned to the war zone in mid-1967 and rendered assistance to USS Forrestal when that carrier also suffered a major fire. Following twenty-six years of service, USS Oriskany was decommissioned in September 1976. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in July 1989 and sold for scrapping in 1994. However, after a prolonged effort that exhibited the perilous state of the domestic ship-breaking industry at the end of the Century, she was repossessed in 1997 and is presently in U.S. Government custody awaiting her final fate.

Lady Washington

The Brig Lady Washington docks at Oakland’s Jack London Square during a month long visit to the San Francisco Bay. Launched in 1989, and operated by the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport of Aberdeen Washington, the Lady Washington and her sailing partner the Hawaiian Chieftan are traveling the West Coast of North America to “educate, inspire, and empower all those that cross her decks.”

The Lady Washington is a replica of the original Lady Washington which was launched in 1750 and served as a Privateer during the Revolutionary War. In 1790 the original Lady W, along with the Columbia Rediviva, sailed around Cape Horn to the Pacific Northwest where it was instrumental in establishing trade between New England, the Pacific Northwest, and the Orient. Her presence helped to establish a basis for an American territorial claim to what would one day become the states of Oregon and Washington.

Continental Increases Orders for Boeing 787 Dreamliner; Orders New Boeing 737-900s

SEATTLE, June 06, 2006 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and Continental Airlines today announced the airline ordered another 10 787-8 Dreamliners and an undisclosed mix of 24 Next-Generation 737s as part of Continental's ongoing growth plans.

Today's order brings to 20 the number of 787s the airline has on order, the most of any U.S. airline. The value of the 10 new 787s and 24 737s is approximately $3 billion at average list prices.

The first of Continental's 787s will deliver in 2009. The Next-Generation 737s contained in the new order are scheduled to begin delivery in 2008.

"The game-changing 787, in combination with the popular 777, will provide Continental with long-range, fuel-efficient capability and the fleet flexibility to react to an ever-changing market," said Mike Bair, Boeing vice president and general manager of the 787 program.

With today's order, Boeing now has 403 orders and commitments from 29 carriers worldwide for the Dreamliner. Continental was the first major U.S. carrier to commit to the technologically advanced 787, which is slated to enter service in 2008.

With the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing continues its leadership and innovation with a mostly composite airplane that consumes 20 percent less fuel, provides airlines with up to 60 percent more cargo revenue capacity and offers passengers a better flying experience. The 787 sets the standard for interior passenger comfort, allowing higher cabin humidity, lower cabin altitude, wider seats and aisles, innovative LCD lighting, larger windows and unmatched stowage capacity.

New! Inaugural California Capital Airshow
a Rousing Success

by Rick W. Pisio

RWP Photography

The organizers of the inaugural California Capital Airshow must have been relieved when the skies cleared on March 18th & 19th, 2006, after 3 weeks of rain every day.

With the first rays of sunshine in weeks, the anticipated attendance of 40,000 people for each day swelled to well above 60,000 on each day. Although the addition of 20,000 people, their appetites, and their cars, made for long lines at the food stands and a long wait to get out of the parking lot after the show, Sacramento area residents were treated to some excellent aerobatics, warbird flybys, military demonstrations, static displays and the US Navy's Blue Angels.

The California Capital Airshow was held at Mather Field 12 miles east of Sacramento. The former Air Force Strategic Air Command base had not seen an airshow since the field became public in 1995.

In addition to the Navy's elite aerobatic team, the show also featured civilian aerobatic performers Julie Clark in her T-34 mentor, Tim Decker in his S-2 Pitts, Chuck Lischer in the F-260 Warrior, Rich Perkins in the L-39 Firecat, Nikolay Timofeev in the Sukhoi SU-26M, and Michael Hunter in the Laser 230.

The Warbirds were represented by Tony Banta with his P-51 Mustang, P-40 Warhawk, and F-8F Bearcat, plus Chuck Wahl in his T-28 Trojan and Tom Camp in his Wildcat.

The military demonstrations include a pair of T-38 Talons out of Beale AFB just to the North, in Marysville, California; a Sacramento Coast Guard Station rescue demonstration with a C-130 and Dolfin Helicopter; an A-10 flight display that included Rich's Incredible Pyro's “Wall of Fire;” an A-10 Thunderbolt II and P-51 Heritage Flight, and of course the Boeing F/A-18s of the Blue Angels.
