| "It has finally arrived!
The Gathering of Mustangs & Legends takes place this
weekend in Columbus, Ohio! Final preparations are underway at Rickenbacker International Airport, the site where the historic Gathering of Mustangs & Legends Air Show will take place. Aircraft began arriving early this week and will continue to do so through Thursday. Countless hours of site preparation have been underway for weeks and the airport looks amazing. Friday features rehearsals for all acts and then Saturday and Sunday, it's non-stop action, from the opening ceremonies at 9:30AM until gates close at 6PM, each day. In addition to our incredible number of P-51 Mustangs, the Legends who flew and maintained them, the USAF Demo Teams and performers, there are several large pavilions with historical exhibits from the Tuskegee Airmen, Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), Rickenbacker International Airport and the USAF. Look for these pavilions on your event map and stop by for a glimpse into aviation history! All premium seating has been sold for all show days. But with the optimal site lines at Rickenbacker, General Admissions seats will give everyone a phenomenal view of all the show performers. ![]() Jere Creed and Ron Buccarelli's exotic, hybrid North American P-51D Mustang racer "Precious Metal," features an "H" model tail, clipped wings and a Rolls Royce Mk.57 Griffon motor. The highly-polished racing plane was built up completely from spare parts and holds no serial number, history or log book, other than as a racer. "Precious Metal" was originally built by Indy Car Racer and former Road Atlanta owner Don Whittington, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and sponsored by Whittington's company, World Jet. Today, "Precious Metal" is owned and sponsored by Lake Air Inc., which owns Placid Lakes Airport in Florida, and a Jet Charter operation at Ft. Lauderdale, the Creed-Buccarelli racer is on hand for GML with pilot Ron Buccarelli present to meet the crowds and sign autographs. The aircraft is seen here over Florida after departing the EAA show at Sun 'N Fun, Lakeland, Florida, en route home to its satellite base at Placid Lakes. The aircraft won the Bronze during the National Championships of 2003, at Stead Airport, Nevada. The aircraft carries Race 38 and the artwork, "The Miner," in tribute to Gary R. Levitz, the original owner of "Precious Metal," a Rolls Royce Merlin-powered P-51D Mustang with an H-tail, later acquired by the Whittington Brothers and campaigned as Race 09. Photo: M.
